(UPDATED) MANILA, Philippines – A magnitude-5.9 earthquake rocked Davao Oriental and other areas Friday morning, June 15, with the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) warning about possible aftershocks.

Phivolcs found the epicenter of the earthquake within the vicinity of Mati, Davao Oriental. The earthquake, which was tectonic in origin, struck at around 9:14 a.m., the agency said. 

It was felt in the following areas, according to Phivolcs:

Intensity IV – General Santos City

Intensity III – Davao City; Mati, Davao Oriental; Digos City, Davao del Sur

Intensity II – Tagum City; Carmen, Davao del Norte 

The US Geological Survey (USGS) also reported an earthquake in the area, initially recording it at magnitude 5.5.

With a depth of 69.4 kilometers, the epicenter was located at 152 kilometers from General Santos City and 185 kilometers from Davao City, according to the USGS.
