DAVAO CITY, Philippines  – A farmer-activist campaigning against the pork barrel system was attacked by motorcycle-riding gunmen minutes after he joined a forum denouncing the scheme in Tagum City, Davao del Norte, on Monday, September 29.

Dexter Ian Selebrado, 32, was rushed to the hospital where he is being treated for gunshot wounds at the nape and hip.

Selebrado, an organizer of the Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas-Davao del Norte, had attended the inter-provincial forum and launch of the People’s Initiative to Abolish Pork Barrel System prior to the attack.

Aya Ragragio, spokesperson of Pagbabago-Southern Mindanao, condemned the attack on Selebrado who, she said, “has been active in the campaign against militarization of peasant and lumad communities in Davao del Norte.”

“We condemn in the strongest possible term this fascist act against activists,” Ragragio said.

She said  said some of the participants at the forum monitored “suspicious men in the forum who tailed Selebrado when he left the venue.” – Rappler.com
