2 NPA rebels killed, 2 nabbed in Davao Occidental firefight
A 45-minute firefight ensues after communist rebels attack government forces in Malita town in Davao Occidental

DAVAO CITY, Philippines – At least two suspected members of the New People’s Army (NPA) were killed while two others were arrested in an encounter in Davao Occidental on Tuesday, October 14, the military said.

Captain Alberto Caber, spokesman of the military’s Eastern Mindanao Command, said communist guerrillas attacked government forces in Barangay Kinanangan, Malita town at around 2 pm on Tuesday.

He identified the casualties as Mark Bryle Garduque and a certain “Daniel” while those arrested  were identified as Marilyn Magpatoc, 31; and Ritchie Abrenica, 26.

Caber said the firefight lasted for 45 minutes, and that due to the “superiority of firepower” of the NPA,  the soldiers immediately requested for reinforcement for the pursuit operations.

Soldiers scouring the site of the firefight recovered 10 high-powered firearms including 5 M16, one M653,  one M14, and 3 AK-47 rifles.
