MANILA, Philippines – Climbers of Mt. Pulag, the highest mountain in Luzon, are advised to use proper gear and exercise caution after a Quezon City resident died of an apparent heart attack while scaling up the mountain on Monday, October 27.

According to Kabayan town police, this is the first time that a climber died while attempting to climb the mountain sacred to the Ibaloys, the indigenous people in the town.

Dr Felix Mangaltag, the town doctor, said 58-year-old Rogelio Canceran died last Monday after resting at Camp 1, the second resting camp before the ascent. Mangaltag said Canceran, who was with his daughter and other companions, died of myocardial infarction or heart attack after suddenly falling down to the trail going up Pulag.

Mangaltag played down rumors that Canceran died of hypothermia after temperature reportedly dipped to 4 degrees centigrade on the area due to the onset of Amihan.

According to the police report, Canceran’s daughter said that her father was having a hard time climbing and was asked to rest at Camp 1. The daughter reportedly asked her father if he still wanted to proceed. Her father decided to proceed after taking a rest.

On the way up, Canceran just fell unconscious. He was brought by the 50th Infantry Battalion troopers to the Dennis Molintas Memorial Hospital, but he was already dead, the police said.

Normally, trekkers are briefed at the ranger station at the foot of the mountain and asked about their medical conditions. But no deaths had occurred since the monitoring was implemented. – Rappler.com
