APEC-ISOM moved from Albay to Manila over Typhoon Hagupit
'While this is highly unfortunate, we have deemed it best to err on the side of prudence and ensure the safety of the delegates,' says Malacañang
MANILA, Philippines –  The first Philippines-hosted Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meeting has been moved from Legazpi, Albay, to Manila due to Typhoon Hagupit, Malacañang announced on Wednesday night, December 3.

Executive Secretary Paquito Ochoa Jr said the decision to transfer the venue of the Informal Senior Officials’ Meeting (ISOM) was made in consultation with the APEC 2015 National Organizing Committee, Albay Governor Joey Salceda, and other stakeholders.

“While this is highly unfortunate, we have deemed it best to err on the side of prudence and ensure the safety of the delegates. Likewise, it will afford the local government to focus on the necessary actions to be taken in light of the coming typhoon,” Ochoa said in a statement.

Albay is among the Typhoon Hagupit “critical areas.”

Malacañang thanked Salceda and the people of Albay “for their cooperation and understanding.” The provincial government had been hard at work in preparing for the international event, and had declared itself “APEC ready” days before.

Legazpi will be the venue of other APEC-related meetings during the Philippine hosting in 2015.

The ISOM, where senior officials of member-economies will discuss the priority agenda of APEC 2015, is scheduled from December 8 to 9.

The typhoon is forecast to enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility on Thursday, and make landfall on Saturday. (READ: Big chance Typhoon Hagupit will hit PH – PAGASA)

Ochoa said the government has put in place “contingencies” in connection with the ISOM, and that the activities would push through, even as it prepares for the coming typhoon. – Rappler.com
