NDRRMC taps social media for faster #RubyResponse

MANILA, Philippines – The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) launched an online campaign meant to speed up response to calls for relief and assistance. 

Before Ruby hit land, NDRMMC executive director Alexander Pama introduced hashtags, Twitter accounts, landline and mobile numbers that typhoon victims can use to coordinate assistance.

Telephone numbers were also provided in case some areas lose Internet connection. In the absence of Internet and telecommunication signals, Pama said the public should coordinate with their barangay officials.

“This is for the information exchange and coordination so we can facilitate quick response for everyone in need,” said Pama. The League of Municipalities is part of the campaign.

To ask for help, the following information are needed:

• WHAT is the nature of the request? Ano ang pangangailangan?
• WHO are you? Identify yourselves.
• WHEN did the incident happen?
• WHERE did the incident happen?

“Please help us help you. Para mas mabilis ang coordination, ginagamit po natin ngayon ang social media,” said Pama. (So coordination is faster, we are now using social media.)

Pama appealed to the public not to post prank messages. 

“We urge everybody to refrain from posting and unverified and unnecessary prank messages. This is a serious matter. We want to help our countrymen who need help,” Pama said. – Carmela Fonbuena/Rappler.com
