MANILA, Philippines – Philippine police on Monday, December 22, will begin taping the muzzles of their issued guns as part of the campaign of the Philippine National Police (PNP) for a “gun-free” celebration of Christmas and New Year.
In a statement issued Friday, December 19, the PNP said its officer-in-charge, Deputy Director General Leonardo Espina, has issued a memorandum reminding PNP personnnel of its “intensified campaign” against indiscriminate firing during the holidays, a perennial problem in the Philippines.
“This traditional gun muzzle is a strong message to all gun owners, especially our policemen and soldiers who are the primary enforcers of the law, to refrain from firing their guns and help prevent casualties and injuries during the revelry of the yuletide,” said Espina.
Stray bullets from the illegal discharge of firearms is a constant issue in the country during the Christmas and New Year celebrations. In 2012, 7-year-old Stephanie Nicole Ella died after a stray bullet hit her head on New Year’s Eve.
Espina said in the statement that the PNP will be working with the Armed Forces of the Philippines and other law enforcement agencies to pinpoint “probably violators.” – Bea Cupin/Rappler.com
