Binay on Christmas: Give ‘genuine service’
The Vice President also says of elderly prisoners: 'My hope is for them to spend their twilight years with their family and loved ones, especially during Christmas'

MANILA, Philippines – Vice President Jejomar Binay on Wednesday, December 24, asked those in government to make “giving comfort and genuine service” their guide not only during the Christmas season but daily.

In a press statement, Binay also made special mention of elderly prisoners. “Those who have recognized and have paid for their crimes should be given the opportunity to rejoin society. Many of our elderly prisoners are sick and in need of care. My hope is for them to spend their twilight years with their family and loved ones, especially during Christmas.”

Binay also called on everyone to remember “to share with our countrymen, especially those who have less in life, our concern and compassion.”

He gave special attention to Overseas Filipino Workers who, while away from their loved ones, would hopefully “feel the love and gratitude of their countrymen.”

Aquino’s message

Earlier, President Benigno Aquino III urged Filipino families to spend time with each other during the holiday season.

“Christmas will be more meaningful if we use it as an opportunity to get even closer to our families,” he said in Filipino. “We know the love of Filipino families knows no boundaries. Isn’t this one thing we take pride in as a quality of our people?”

He also said, “Near or far, we are not lacking in the way we let our families feel our love.”

The President was likewise thankful for the many lives saved during the onslaught of Typhoon Ruby. “[Let’s] thank the Lord for the many who were rescued despite Typhoon Ruby and will be able to celebrate Christmas with their families,” he said, referring to the recent typhoon that hit the country and affected millions but killed only 18. – Rappler.com
