TACLOBAN CITY, Philippines (UPDATED) –  A  pumpboat carrying at least 6 people has gone missing in Southern Leyte on Monday afternoon, December 29, according to the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO).

The passengers included Limasawa town police chief Richard Castañares, according to Allan Tabell, chief of the Department of the Interior and Local Government Central Office Disaster Information Coordinating Center (DILG-CODIX). The others were sacristans and the boat operator.

The boat was heading from San Roque in Macrohon town to Limasawa island at around 2:00pm Monday. 

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) earlier conducted a search but halted the operation at nightfall on Monday, Tabell said. 

PDRRMO chief Danny Atienza also said the bad weather condiition in the area prevented responders from continuing the search.
