3,500 cops to secure Nazareno procession
The Manila Police District begins clearing illegal vendors along Plaza Miranda, Plaza Lacson and other areas surrounding Quiapo Church in Manila

MANILA, Philippines – Over 3,500 personnel of the Philippine National Police (PNP) were deployed to secure the Feast of the Black Nazarene on Friday, January 9.

Interior and Local Government Secretary Mar Roxas said the Manila Police District (MPD) already has a Task Group to secure the route of the motorcade and parade, and control the millions of devotees expected to flock the religious event.

The MPD has also begun clearing illegal vendors stationed along Plaza Miranda, Plaza Lacson and other areas surrounding Quiapo Church, or areas along the procession route.

“This is the whole of PNP at work. Everyone is contributing to make sure that the both petty and high-profile criminals will not take advantage of the celebration,” said Roxas.

The Feast of the Black Nazarene is one of the biggest religious events in the country. Millions of devotees are expected to join the procession, which begins at the Quirino Grandstand and ends at the Quiapo Church. – Bea Cupin/Rappler.com
