Coast Guard ready for Black Nazarene mishaps
The Philippine Coast Guard is prepared for any accidents that may happen before, during, and after the annual procession, including people falling into the Pasig River

MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine Coast Guard is ready for any possible incidents that may require its help during the procession of the Feast of the Black Nazarene on Friday, January 9.

Commander Christopher Meniado, PCG team leader for the Black Nazarene festivities, told Rappler that around 5 to 6 rubber boats are on standby in case a devotee falls into to the Pasig River, or other rescue needs.

Slightly bigger aluminum boats are also designated in each bridge for monitoring.

At least 60 coast guards are deployed to man the other bridges in the vicinity of Manila. The procession will pass the recently rehabilitated Jones Bridge before it arrives at Quiapo Church.

These bridges, Meniado said, will be subject to heavy foot traffic as devotees use alternative routes before and after the procession.

He cited an incident  two years ago, when a devotee fell from a bridge after the procession, when everyone was scrambling to head home.

Meniado urged the public to be mindful of their surroundings and to be careful to ensure public safety, in general

Huwag na po mag-horse play para hindi na magkagulo at magka-aksidente pa. Sundin lang lagi ang mga nakatalagang marshalls at magiging maayos ang lahat  (Do not engage in horse play so there won’t be any trouble that would  lead to accidents. Just follow the designated marshalls and everything will be fine),” Meniado said. – Rappler.com
