MANILA, Philippines – While a visit to Cebu is not on Pope Francis’s itinerary, the famous Dancing Inmates of maximum security prison facility Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center (CPDRC) performed Jamie Rivera’s “We Are All God’s Children” on Thursday, January 15, just in time for the pope’s arrival.
Famous for their upbeat dances, 2,160 inmates showcased their solemn side, and danced in front of an audience to the official Papal Visit theme song as a tribute to Pope Francis’s visit to the country.
Aside from the dance itself, a boxing showdown also served as secondary entertainment.
The inmates first gained recognition when a video of them dancing to Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” went viral on YouTube Since then, they have been featured on CNN, and have performed other songs like PSY’s “Gangnam Style” and Pharrell’s “Happy.”
On January 22, 2010, they were treated to a visit by Michael Jackson’s choreographer Travis Payne and dancers Daniel Celebre and Daniel Reid who taught them performances from the late singer’s concert-documentary film This Is It.
The inmates perform dance routines as part of their daily exercise and rehabilitation. – Rappler.com
