'Upscale' taxicabs will be on the streets of Davao City starting Friday

MANILA, Philippines – Move over, Manila. Starting Friday, July 6, Davao City will be rolling out cabs that will accept ATM or credit cards as payment.

Select Black Mabuhay Taxis will begin accepting fare from passengers who have ATMs and credit cards connected to Megalink and BancNet, a viral post on Davao City Mayor Sara Z. Duterte’s Facebook fan page stated.

Mabuhay Taxi, one of the biggest and oldest taxi fleet operators in Davao, teamed up with China Bank, BancNet and Megalink to pioneer cashless payments for taxis in the Philippines, according to Chinabank.ph.

In an agreement signed by the parties last April 12, at least 20 units of Mabuhay Taxi will be installed with wireless point-of-sale (POS) terminals for the initial roll out. Over 200 units will follow.

The taxis won’t even charge a minimum. “Even if it is below P100, the transaction will still be processed,” said Joselito Crisostomo, branch head of China Bank Davao-Lanang.

“I hope that more businesses will be inclined to adopt this technology as a payment channel for their goods and services,” added BancNet Executive Vice President and COO Aris Zafra.

Even without the electronic payment systerm, the Mabuhay’s Black taxi line is already a cut above regular cabs because it’s equipped with a GPS (global positioning system), Pierre Ryan Tan, assistant manager of Mabuhay Taxi, told Yahoo! News.

“We are positioning the Black cabs as an upscale taxi but at the same rate (as regular taxis),” Tan said.
