'The SAF units fought with bravery and demonstrated their commitment to ensuring peace and order in their country,' says the embassy

COTABATO, Philippines – The US embassy on Friday, January 30, reiterated its support for the Philippine government’s efforts to fight terrorists even as it condoled with families of the 44 slain members of the elite Special Action Force.

“The SAF units fought with bravery and demonstrated their commitment to ensuring peace and order in their country,” the embassy said in a statement posted on its website on Friday, January 30.

“The United States reiterates its support for the Philippine government’s efforts to combat international terrorism while promoting a just and lasting peaceful resolution to the conflict in Mindanao,” it added.

The embassy did not comment on reports of its involvement in gathering intelligence for the SAF regarding the location of Malaysian terrorist Zulkifli Bin Hir, also known as Marwan, who was said to have been killed in the January 25 clash between SAF troops and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF).

American soldiers were sighted during rescue operations after the Maguindanao clash, raising questions about their presence in the area. As part of a military agreement with the Philippines, US soldiers conduct training for Filipinos in Mindanao.

US smart bombs were used in a 2012 Philippine military operation that also targetted Marwan. – with a report from Jef Maitem/Rappler.com
