MANILA, Philippines – Is declaring certain provinces as mining-free zones a good idea for the economy and well-being of communities?
Recent congressional hearings on moves to declare at least 7 provinces and one provincial district as off-limits to mining have ruffled feathers in the mining industry, some members of which currently operate in those provinces.
The first report of the Philippine Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (PH-EITI) shows the status of mining in the country today, its contribution to the economy and its promises for economic growth.
