MANILA, Philippines – Detained Senator Jinggoy Estrada witnessed his son’s high school graduation on Tuesday, March 17, after the anti-graft court Sandiganbayan on Monday, March 16, granted his motion for a furlough.
Estrada had sought a 6-hour furlough from 1 to 7:30 pm but the Sandiganbayan Fifth Division only allowed him to leave his detention facility in Camp Crame from 2 to 5 pm to attend the graduation rites of his son, young actor Julian Emilio Estrada.
Sandiganbayan Fifth Division Chair Rolando Jurado told Estrada Monday in open court that the court was granting his motion for the sake of his son, not the senator.
The court had earlier denied Estrada’s request for a birthday furlough in February, as well as another request for a Christmas furlough in December 2014.
The senator is one of the legislators accused of receiving kickbacks under an elaborate scheme known as the pork barrel scam. – Rappler.com
