Hackers deface Philippine police website
The hacking incident shows that some government websites are not secure

MANILA, Philippines – The website of the Philippine National Police Police Security and Protection Group (PSPG) was defaced with pro-Palestinian remarks on Sunday, March 22.

“I Love My Country, and I love Palestine. Don’t Panik Yo! You’re Not in Danger. Fuck Israel, Free palestine, Fuck Obama and Bankemon, Fuck Daaichi,” the hacker’s message read.

The Israel-Palestinian conflict is a long-running international dispute over territorial control of key areas, with Palestine wanting east Jerusalem as the capital of its future state. The United States is a key ally of Israel.

Neither is the purpose of Sunday’s cyber attack clear nor the message in relation to the Philippine government straightforward, but the hacking incident proves yet again that some government websites are not secure.

Hacking or crackling is deemed an illegitimate form of public expression by Philippine law. It is a crime punishable under the E-Commerce Act of 2000 or Republic Act 8792 by a fine of at least P100,000 and a mandatory imprisonment of 6 months to 3 years.

Based on the message in the defaced PNPPSPG website, the act was committed by a hacker codenamed Leon HDz.

The PSPG is one of the major operational support units of the PNP.

In 2013, the infamous hacking collective Anonymous Philippines defaced over 30 government websites. At the time, the group explicitly claimed responsibility, carrying an anti-corruption message.

Its members largely remain anonymous.

The series of hacking incidents in 2013 came after the revelation of the pork barrel scam, an elaborate scheme where lawmakers received commissions in exchange for allowing their development funds to be funnelled to ghost projects of fake foundations. – Rappler.com
