JBC will accept opposition to the nominees for Chief Justice until July 20

MANILA, Philippines – The Judicial and Bar Council (JBC) has received at least 7 letters opposing the possible appointment of Justice Secretary Leila De Lima as Supreme Court (SC) Chief Justice, according to reports

Among those who sent the letters were identified as Arturo de Castro, Frumencio Pulgar, Paul Camillon, Dr. Oscar Noble, Jericho Urquiola, Shiela Marie Gargolez, and former Chief Justice Renato Corona’s lawyer Rico Paolo Quicho.

The JBC may accept until July 20 letters opposing the nominees.

Among the reasons cited in the letters is De Lima’s defiance of the SC last year. In November 2011, De Lima instructed airport officials to bar former President Arroyo from leaving the country inspite SC’s temporary restraining order on the travel ban against Arroyo.

Quicho, on the other hand, said De Lima lacks the “competence, integrity and independence” required of a chief justice.

De Lima is facing disbarment cases, which are yet to be resolved by the Integrated Bar of the Philippines. – Rappler.com
