Cebu’s Bar topnotcher didn’t even finish the exams
Michelle Liao, the first female topnotcher for University of Cebu, is also a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and was given a brand new car by the school

CEBU CITY, Philippines – Cebu’s topnotcher was just hopeful she would pass the Bar exams because she was not able to finish the entire test.

That’s why she was surprised when she learned she placed 5th on the exams.

Michelle “Mishi” Liao, 32, said she was thankful to God for passing. Liao went to the Carmelites monastery to attend mass after she knew of the Bar exams result.

Wala ko ga expect nga makapasar so grabi ka happy,” said Mishi as she was fondly called by her friends. (I was not expecting to pass the exams, so I was extremely happy.)

The new lawyer said she credited “prayers” for her success. “Bisag unsaon pa nimo ug patay sa imong lawas unya dili ka kahibaw mangayo ug tabang sa Ginoo, wa gyud mahitabo,” she added. (No matter how hard you try to kill yourself over work, if you do not know how to ask and pray, nothing will happen.)

Liao, the first female topnotcher for University of Cebu, is also a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and was given a brand new car by the school.

UC chancellor Candice Gotianuy posted on facebook the photo of the Toyota Vios that was given to Liao.

“And this new car is for the 5th placer in the Bar Exam. University of Cebu traditionally gives our Bar topnotchers and the #1 placer in most licensure exams in a car,” said Gotianuy. “It’s both an incentive and reward for our students. Congratulations Atty. Michelle Liao! And kudos to our Law School headed by Dean Atty. Baldomero Estenzo.”

Liao resigned from her work to focus on reviewing for the Bar exams.

To her friends, Liao is a person who will always listen to their woes and problems. “In a nutshell: Mishi is one of the unassuming persons I know. And for those who know her better, a caring confidante,” said one of her close friends Kara Mae Noveda.

Noveda remembers how Mishi was worried that she will flunk the exam. Mishi then received a phone call from their remedial law professor, reassuring her that she could pass, at the very least, Noveda added.

On March 27, Liao said in a radio interview over dyHP-AM that she still does not have a definite plan. “I am open for all options, pero sa pagka karon, enjoy lang usa ko, mag celebrate,” she said.

In the same radio interview she advised future Bar exam takers to learn how to manage time and to balance studying and rest. “Dili pwede nga mag study ra pirmi, aron dili pressure kaayo,” she said. – Rappler.com
