(6th UPDATE) MANILA, Philippines – An active low pressure area (ALPA) and the effects of the southwest monsoon triggered heavy rain Friday, July 20, the state weather bureau said.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) spotted an ALPA 320 kilometers east northeast of Casiguran, Aurora as of 2 a.m. Friday. The southwest monsoon is also affecting Visayas and Mindanao, Pagasa said.

Itong weather system na binabantayan natin ngayon – ang ALPA at ang southwest monsoon – ang nagdadala ng kaulapan na nakaaapekto sa atin ngayon,” said Pagasa forecaster Bernard Punzalan said in an interview on dzBB radio. (This weather system that we are monitoring now – the ALPA and the southwest monsoon – is causing the rain that is now affecting us.)

The ALPA is likely to turn into a tropical cyclone, Punzalan said. If it does, Pagasa will name it “Ferdie.”

Pagasa will issue a weather update on the ALPA and the southwest monsoon at 11 a.m.

Metro Manila rains

PAGASA issued a yellow warning signal over Metro Manila at 8:55 a.m, which lasted for about 8 hours.

“All rainfall warnings are terminated,” PAGASA said in a 4:48 p.m. update

But PAGASA said Metro Manila residents are still advised to “to watch out for updates on possible reissuance of warnings.”

Yellow warning means “rainfall observation is from 7.5 mm to 15 mm within 1 hour is likely to continue.” It calls for community awareness because flooding is possible.

Moderate to heavy rains were also observed in Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, and central Luzon.
