Arroyo wants house arrest in Pampanga
The former president says her provincial residence is around 200 meters away from a police station

MANILA, Philippines – Former president and incumbent Pampanga 2nd District Representative Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo on Thursday, April 23, filed a supplemental motion before the anti-graft court for her house arrest petition.

Arroyo asked the Sandiganbayan First Division to consider allowing her to be detained in her provincial residence in Lubao, Pampanga, should the court deny her original petition to be placed under house arrest in the exclusive La Vista subdivision, Quezon City.

Her residence at Purok 6, San Nicolas 1, Lubao, has an area of 500 square meters and is around 200 meters away from the municipal police station, the motion said.

Arroyo formally sought house arrest before the anti-graft court on April 8, citing humanitarian considerations. She is currently detained at the Veterans’ Memorial Medical Center in Quezon City.

She is suffering from “multiple cervical spondylosis” or the wearing off of the bones.

Her lawyers have sought the help of international lawyer Amal Alamuddin Clooney for the case. This resulted in the filing of a complaint before the United Nations High Commission on Human Rights seeking for the release of the former president based on humanitarian grounds.

The Sandiganbayan earlier denied Arroyo’s demurrer to evidence for her plunder case over the alleged misuse of P365.9 million worth of Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office funds. – Rappler.com
