Will he run for mayor again? Tommy Osmeña is cancer-free
‘Thank you for all your prayers,’ form Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña posts on Facebook. ‘Time to come back to city hall,’ a supporter replies.

CEBU CITY, Philippines – Former Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña announced on his Facebook page that he has been declared cancer-free during his latest checkup at the Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas, in the United States.

This fueled speculations he might run for mayor again in 2016.

“It’s official! 6 years cancer-free! Thank you for all your prayers,” said Osmeña in his Facebook post dated April 26. The former mayor was in Houston on April 21 with wife Margot for his annual medical checkup.

In 2008, Tommy sought treatment in Houston and underwent surgery for his stage IV urinary bladder cancer. His bladder was surgically removed while he was still serving as mayor of Cebu City.

Friends and followers reacted to his Facebook post, congratulating him and urging him to run again for mayor against incumbent Mayor Michael Rama.

Here are some of the comments from Osmena’s post which pushed him to run for Mayor in 2016 among the 3,620 likes and comments.

Osmena, whose allies still dominate the Cebu City council, is one of the possible contenders in the mayoral race in 2016. His wife, Cebu City Councilor Margot Osmeña, is being prodded by supporters to run against Rama if Tomas would not run.

Rama is a member of the United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) of Vice President Jejomar Binay, while the Osmeñas are affiliated with the Liberal Party and the local Bando Osmena Pundok Kauswagan (BOPK) party.

Rama severed his ties with the BOPK in the 2013 elections, and defeated Tomas in most of the bailiwicks of the Osmeñas. Rappler.com
