Cebu City traffic rerouting for May 29 heritage tours
Several roads will be closed to make way for 'Gabii sa Kabilin' or Night of Heritage from 6 pm until midnight

CEBU CITY, Philippines – Several roads will be closed in Cebu City from 6 pm on Friday, May 29, until midnight to make way for the heritage tours dubbed “Gabii sa Kabilin” or Night of Heritage.

Traffic will be rerouted in at least 6 major thoroughfares in Cebu City going to surrounding cities, the City Traffic Operations and Management (Citom) said.

The roads to be closed are:

  • E. Aboitiz
  • Lopez Jaena and Mabini streets up to MJ Cuenco Avenue junction
  • Portions of the Osmeña Boulevard
  • Junctions in Colon Street

Jeepneys traversing downtown areas will also be affected by the road closures.

Buses and public utility jeepneys PUJ bound for SM City and North Reclamation area from Cebu City’s south will also be rerouted.

Citom said motorists will be guided with traffic signs that will be installed in the rerouted areas.

The Gabii sa Kabilin is a joint project of the private sector led by the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation; the city governments of Cebu, Mandaue, Talisay, and Lapu-Lapu; and tourism stakeholders.

The annual event is aimed at helping preserve heritage buildings and structures in Metro Cebu.

Started 9 years ago, the event is an adaptation of Germany’s Lange Nacht der Museen or Long Night of Museums, an anticipated event in 120 cities in Europe which has also been adapted in the Latin American countries. In 2007, Cebu became the only city in Asia-Pacific region, a distinction it holds to this day.

Where a P150 ticket can take you

Participants will choose different buses that are plying particular tourist spots. They will be allowed to mix different tour trips depending on what they want.

For a ticket worth P150, the participants will have unlimited rides to shuttle buses, tartanilla (horse-drawn carriage), and guided walk tours around participating museums, churches, heritage and historical sites and buildings in Cebu, Mandaue, Lapu-Lapu, and Talisay.

These buses and tartanilla will be assigned to 8 color-coded routes that will make stops at particular featured sites.

For example, the Blue route includes stops at Fuente Osmeña park, Cebu City Museum, Fo Guang Shan Chu Un Temple, Capitol Building, Anthill Fabric Gallery, and the University of the Philippines Cebu campus.

Participants have 6 hours to try all 8 routes. – Rappler.com
