NEGROS OCCIDENTAL, Philippines – Five biology students were injured after they were attacked by swarm of bees while on field work at the Guintubdan Wilderness Park in Barangay Ara-al, La Carlota City, on Tuesday afternoon, June 2.

Police said the victims were Odessa Sales and Lynvie Sagayno, both 19 years old and from the University of St La Salle, Bacolod City; Allya Bicoy (19), Roderick Makiputin (21), and Ethel Dominique (19) of the Mindanao State University in Illigan City.

Sales, Bicoy, and Dominique sustained severe bites, while the other two sustained minor bites.

Senior Superintendent Samuel Nacion, officer-in-charge of the Negros Occidental Police Provincial Office, said that the students encountered a swarm of honey bees, which became hostile to them, at around 2 pm, when they were trailing back to their camp.

He said a local rescue unit rushed to the aid of the victims and brought them to the Don Salvador Benedicto Memorial District Hospital in the city.

He said that the students had been camping out in the park since May 29 for their biological research on Mount Kanlaon.
