Government forces are presently conducting pursuit operations to go after the withdrawing rebels

DAVAO CITY, Philippines – A government soldier was killed while two others were wounded in a firefight with communist guerrillas in the town of Santa Cruz in Davao del Sur on Friday afternoon, June 19, a military official said.

Ltc Eduardo Gubat, spokesman of the military’s Eastern Mindanao Command, said a unit of government forces were conducting a security patrol when they were fired upon by an undetermined number of New People’s Army (NPA) rebels in Sitio Tibaol, Barangay Sinoron at around 10 minutes past noon.

A firefight ensued and lasted for minutes until the communist guerrillas withdrew towards the mountainous area of Davao del Sur.

Recovered from the scene of the firefight were an M16 rifle, two rifle grenades, 3 explosives , an assortment of ammunitions, medicines, a radio, document, and personal backpacks, Gubat said.

Gubat said the wounded soldiers wee immediately evacuated and brought to the Camp Pancan Station Hospital in Davao City.

“Necessary coordination was already made by 39 Infantry Battalion to the family of the soldier who was killed after the firefight,” Gubat said.

Government forces are presently conducting pursuit operations to go after the withdrawing rebels.

Peace talks with local communists have failed to end the communist insurgency, the longest in Asia, which has claimed about 30,000 lives by official estimates. – Rappler.com
