Supreme Court inches closer to same-sex marriage debate

The Philippine Supreme Court (SC) ordered the government on Tuesday, June 30 to comment on a petition filed by a Filipino lawyer to allow for same-sex marriages in the country. SC spokesman Theodore Te said the SC ordered the Civil Registrar to comment on the petition filed by lawyer Jesus Nicardo M. Falcis III. This brings the court closer to a possible discussion on the division issue and comes days after the US Supreme Court made same-sex marriage legal throughout the nation. Falcis’ petition argued that limiting civil marriages to heterosexuals violates the constitutionally guaranteed protection for equal treatment.
