
A year-and-a-half after an earthquake-sparked tsunami knocked out cooling systems at the Fukushima nuclear plant, Japanese mark the 67th anniversary of the atomic bombing on Hiroshima on August 6, Monday. The ceremonies recall the US bombing of a Hiroshima that killed an estimated 140,000 in the final days of World War II. It was authorized by then US president Harry Truman who also 3 days later approved the second atomic bombing in the Nagasaki which killed more than 70,000. The bombings killed people instantly or caused burns and radiation sickness after the blast. Hiroshima has been a focal point for the global movement against nuclear weapons. Post-Fukushima, Japan has seen a string of anti-nuclear protests after Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda ordered the restart of two nuclear reactors in the wake of looming power shortages.
