
Economist George Akerlof, who was awarded the Nobel Prize in 2001, contradicted the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) and said women who are given the right to choose can “only increase the dignity of marriage and its sanctity.” He contradicted the CBCP which carried on its website Akerlof’s research and quoted him as saying, “Contraceptives bring about the downgrading of marriage, more extramarital sex, more fatherless children, (and) more single mothers.” The Nobel winner’s research was taken out of context as it was conducted within an American cultural framework and is not applicable to the Philippines where abortion is illegal and single mothers are common. Akerlof was unaware that his research on American out-of-wedlock childbearing was cited by the CBCP. He was moved to air his views after he was contacted for comment by a freelance journalist.
