BAGUIO CITY, Philippines (4th UPDATE) – Two women died while 5 other people were injured when a landslide and a felled trees hit a utility van (plate number AAK 9898) and a jeepney (AYK 824) along Kennon Road at around 9 am on Monday, July 13.

Based on the investigation by the Baguio City Police Office, both vehicles were traversing upward to Baguio City when the landslide occurred and trees fell on the vehicles.

Baguio General Hospital declared Marjorie Magsino, 33, dead on arrival, while Teresita De Guzman, 61, died at around 11:40 am while undergoing treatment. The fatalities were both from Pangasinan.

The Office of the Civil Defense Cordillera, through Regional Director Andrew Alex Uy, said the following individuals sustained multiple physical injuries:

  • Phing De Guzman, 40, from Malasique, Pangasinan
  • Jun Eric Sumyo, 23, from Urdaneta City, Pangasinan
  • Eugenio Henry, 45, from Urdaneta Pangasinan
  • Ernesto Bontoc Luis, 48, from la Trinidad, Benguet
  • Mary Jane Lovino, 32, from Virac, Itogon, Benguet

The victims were aboard a Toyota passenger van going up to Baguio when a mass of earth collapsed on them at Wabac, Kennon Road in Camp 6, Tuba, Benguet, below the famous Lion’s Head.

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) closed the 32-kilometer road to traffic to clear it of debris.

Government engineers have placed warning signs along the highway since continuous landslides and rockslides are expected due to recent heavy rains in the Cordilleras.

Kennon Road was also closed last week as heavy rains dumped by Tropical Storm Egay triggered landslides. 

On Sunday afternoon, July 12, miner Joben Robiz Bao-anan, 30, died when mudslide hit a smallscale mining camp in Ampucao, Itogon, Benguet, due to the continuous heavy rains in the area.

The Itogon Health Emergency Management Office reported that 4 other miners sustained multiple injuries.

Brought to the Baguio General Hospital for treatment were: 

  • Glen Bao-anan Balao, 18
  • Amos Bao-anan, 21
  • Barton Bao-anan, 17

Another miner, Manuel Diano, 30, suffered a leg fracture. Rappler.com
