8 students rushed to QC hospital after eating macapuno candy

MANILA, Philippines – At least 8 students of Juan Sumulong High School in Quezon City were rushed to the Quirino Memorial Medical Center on Thursday, July 16, after they experienced vomiting and stomachache following their consumption of macapuno candies, reports said.

A total of 40 students received samples of the candies, according to a report from radio station dzBB, but only 8 were rushed to the hospital. The source of the sweets has yet to be determined as of this posting.

One of the students was reportedly brought to the intensive care unit for apparent slowing down of the heartbeat, according to a separate dzMM report. 

Samples of the candy will be turned over to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for testing. 

The incident comes after thousands in the Caraga region – most of them schoolchildren in Surigao del Sur – fell sick after eating “poisoned” durian candies.

The FDA on Thursday said the durian candies tested positive for staphylococcus bacteria, but further tests would be made. – Rappler.com
