The US government is helping the Philippines recover the suspected ill-gotten wealth of Janet Napoles, the alleged mastermind of the multi-million-peso pork barrel scam. Justice Undersecretary Jose Justiniano said Philippine officials from the Department of Justice and the National Bureau of Investigation met with US embassy officials, including their legal attaché, in mid-2014 to seek their help. On Tuesday, July 14, the US justice department said it filed a civil forfeiture complaint against Napoles to gain control over her assets worth $12.5 million (P565 million). If and when the US government succeeds, Justice Secretary Leila de Lima said the Philippine government will request that the money be turned over to the Philippine government.
