SONA: Young 'Asia's Got Talent' finalist to sing nat'l anthem
MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) – Ten-year-old Gwyneth Dorado, one of the Filipino finalists in the first season of Asia's Got Talent, has been chosen to sing "Lupang Hinirang" for the President's last State of the Nation Address (SONA) on Monday, July 27.
In a press statement, House of Representatives deputy secretary general for legislative operations Artemio Adasa Jr said that the "refreshing and angelic voice" of Dorado will "set the tone" for President Benigno Aquino III's last SONA as well as the third and last regular session of the 16th Congress in Batasan Pambansa.
"This is in recognition of the mercurial achievement of a young girl, whose singing ability is adored not only in Asia but worldwide," said Adasa. "She truly represents the vast and incredible wealth of talents Filipino youth can offer."
He thanked deputy secretary general for internal audit Cecilia David for "being instrumental" in including the young singing sensation into the SONA's program.
In a phone interview with Rappler, Dorado said she finds singing the national anthem for the SONA as a challenge.
"Sobrang happy po ako and proud, and at the same time din po, nervous din ako kasi malaking event din po 'yun at kakanta din po ako sa harap ng President (I'm so happy and proud, and at the same time, I'm also nervous because it's a big event and I'm going to sing in front of the President)," she said.
According to her mother, Jeanette, Dorado is already practicing for Monday by analyzing the meaning and the pronunciation of the words in the national anthem. The young singer is also refraining from eating sweets and drinking softdrinks to take care of her voice.
Dorado was the first Filipino contestant to make it the Asia's Got Talent grand finals after getting the most number of votes from the public in the Semifinals Night 1. (WATCH: Asia's Got Talent: What's next for the Filipino grand finalists?)
