The Philippines plans to station fighter jets and frigates on Subic Bay, a former United States naval base facing the South China Sea. It was one of the US’ largest overseas bases until it was shut down more than two decades ago. Subic is about 200 kilometers (125 miles) from a shoal off the northern Philippines controlled by Chinese forces. This comes after the Philippine government said it would reopen Subic Bay and station Filipino military assets there for the first time.
