Havana embassy opening signal shift in US-Cuba relations

The former US Interests Section in Havana, Cuba became an embassy just after midnight. There was no perceptible change, except for a small printed sign that read “Embassy of the United States, Havana, Cuba, July 20.” July 20, 2015 marks the day the United States and Cuba re-establish diplomatic relations. For the first time since severing ties in 1961, they’ll reopen embassies in each other’s capitals. No US flag will fly over the building on Havana’s waterfront Malecon until US Secretary of State John Kerry visits sometime later this summer. Cuba’s foreign minister, Bruno Rodríguez, flew to Washington DC Monday to preside over the flag-raising ceremony held at the newly inaugurated Cuban embassy there.
