In Northern Mindanao, Bukidnon overtakes Cagayan de Oro in new COVID-19 cases
The national goverment should start considering raising the quarantine levels in Northern Mindanao, says the DOH regional office

Bukidnon has overtaken Cagayan de Oro in terms of new COVID-19 infections in Northern Mindanao, as the region saw cases nearly doubling in just a day.

Data released by the Department of Health (DOH) showed that Northern Mindanao’s new COVID-19 cases soared to 603 on Wednesday, May 26 – from 333 on Tuesday, May 25 – or by 81% in just 24 hours.

Bukidnon accounted for much of the surge – from 89 on Tuesday, the province’s new COVID-19 cases reached 206, or over 100%, a day later.

The landlocked province topped the DOH list of areas in Northern Mindanao with the highest number of new cases, dislodging Cagayan de Oro that counted 94 new cases on Tuesday, and 126 on Wednesday.

The figures were the highest so far in the region, Bukidnon, and Cagayan de Oro since the start of the pandemic in 2020.

“How tragic! We are bleeding!” exclaimed Cagayan de Oro Councilor Edgar Cabanlas, who is still recovering from weeks of bout with COVID-19.

Dr. Jose Llacuna Jr., DOH regional director, said the national goverment should start considering raising the quarantine levels in Northern Mindanao.

DOH-Northern Mindanao officials said 591 of the 603 new cases in Northern Mindanao arelocal transmissions, indicating that the deadly virus was spreading like wildfire in the region.

The number of COVID-19 cases soared too in Misamis Occidental. The province registered the third highest number of new COVID-19 cases in the region at 106, from 61 on Tuesday.

Misamis Oriental’s cases sharply increased from 44 to 87 in the last two days.

Lanao del Norte also registered an increase of over 300% – from 10 to 44 new cases – in a day’s time.

Iligan City, where the first COVID-19 case in Northern Mindanao was documented last year, counted only 22 new cases as of Wednesday. The city had 20 new cases a day earlier.

The region’s lone island province of Camiguin only had one new case, the lowest throughout Northern Mindanao. – Rappler.com
