Cebu City Mayor Edgardo Labella will be on official leave for several days while he's in the hospital, says Cebu City Administrator Floro Casas

Cebu City Mayor Edgardo Labella is again on official leave for health reasons – his fourth in less than a year – this, time, after experiencing “persistent cough,” a city official said on Wednesday, July 14.

In an interview streamed by Cebu Daily News on Wednesday, Cebu City Administrator Floro Casas confirmed to media that Labella was admitted to a hospital in Cebu that day.

“Actually, si mayor karon is on official leave starting today kay naa man siyay persistent cough. So naa siya karon, on-going iyang checkup karon,” he said.

(Actually, the mayor is on official leave starting today because he’s been experiencing persistent cough. So he is there now. His checkup is ongoing.)

Casas said the mayor may be on leave until Friday, July 16.

Rappler tried to contact Casas for further comments but had yet to receive a reply as of posting.

In February, Labella worked from home in February while recovering from an ear infection. In May, he was confined due to pneumonia. In September 2020, we went on sick leave for gallbladder surgery.

Vice Mayor Michael Rama had earlier challenged Labella to reveal his “true state of health.”

Meanwhile, the Vice Mayor told the Cebu City Council during its regular session that he had not received official communication from Labella’s office regarding his official leave.

Rama said this after the City Council questioned his authority to preside over the meeting, as he was, in effect, the acting mayor while Labella was on leave. In this case,City Councilor Donaldo “Dondon ” Hontiveros would be the acting vice mayor and would preside over council meetings.
