MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) – Mayor Vicente Loot of Daanbantayan, Cebu, survived an ambush by around 5 Tagalog-speaking armed men on Sunday morning, May 13, police said.

Loot was with his family when the ambush happened, according to an initial report by the Philippine National Police (PNP).

The ambush injured a driver and a helper, police said.

The incident happened in Maya, Daanbantayan, Cebu, at around 7:20 am on Sunday.

The perpetrators were aboard a white van bearing plate number 5884.

Loot said "he and his family had just arrived from Malapascua Island and were disembarking from a pumpboat when 3 armed men approached them and fired at them," according to ABS-CBN News.

Loot was one of the retired police generals linked by President Rodrigo Duterte to the illegal drug trade. – Rappler.com
