Davao tops the list of Mindanao regions with the most number of COVID-19 cases since the start of the pandemic in 2020

Davao Region accounted for one-third of the COVID-19 cases in Mindanao that breached 100,000 in the first week of June, data culled by Rappler showed.

Davao topped the list of Mindanao regions with the most number of COVID-19 cases since the start of the pandemic in 2020.

Davao City, where President Rodrigo Duterte served as mayor before his rise to power in 2016, accounted for 59% or 211 of southern Mindanao’s 355 new cases as of Saturday, June 5.

Davao Region registered 33.5% or 30,083 of the 89,679 cumulative cases in five Mindanao regions since last year, based on separate June 5 data from various regional offices of the Department of Health (DOH).

A 6th region, Zamboanga Peninsula, has not been factored in because the DOH office in western Mindanao has yet to update its report on the COVID-19 situation in Region 9 as of this posting.

The DOH regional office’s latest report, however, showed the Zamboanga Peninsula with 17,593 cumulative cases as of June 2, a figure that brings Mindanao’s COVID-19 cases since 2020 to 107,272 at the very least.

Catching up with the Davao region is Northern Mindanao that started seeing surges in COVID-19 cases in May. Region 10 counted 23,224, or 22.8%, of the five region’s cumulative cases as of Saturday.

Northern Mindanao also counted 5,349 active cases on Saturday alone, 952 more than the Davao region’s 4,397 on the same day.

Its newly documented COVID-19 cases on Saturday, however, was 167, way below the Davao region’s 355. But a day earlier, June 4, Northern Mindanao saw 429 new cases vis-à-vis Davao region’s 409.

Caraga registered the third highest number of cumulative COVID-19 cases of the five regions at 17.59% or 15,778, and it was followed by Soccsksargen with 13,621 cases or 15.1% as of Saturday.

The Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) accounted only for 7.7% or 6,973 COVID-19 cases since 2020, based on the June 5 data from the special administrative region’s Ministry of Health. – Rappler.com
