(UPDATED) A steel girder falls on 6 vehicles along the East Service Road in Barangay Cupang, Muntinlupa

At least one person is dead and 4 others hurt after a steel girder used in the Skyway extension project fell on 6 vehicles in Muntinlupa City on Saturday morning, November 21.

The incident happened at around 8:50 am along the East Service Road in Barangay Cupang, Muntinlupa.

Project contractor EEI Corporation said that a crane was being positioned when it tilted and fell on the steel girder that spanned the two posts of the northbound Skyway extension project.

“The girder fell on vehicles below, killing at least one and injuring at least 4 persons who were rushed by ambulances from the Skyway O&M Corporation and EEI to various hospitals,” EEI said.

“We are monitoring the progress of the injured and are trying to get in touch with their next of kin for proper coordination and to extend any assistance they may need,” it added.

EEI said that it will review its safety protocols following the incident to ensure that it does not happen again.

“Our hearts and prayers go with the affected families. This is an unfortunate and heart-breaking accident that must not happen again. We will review immediately our safety and operating protocols as we build a strategic infrastructure for the public’s convenience,” it said.

The area is being cleared as of the moment to allow the passage of vehicles, it added.

The Metro Manila Skyway Stage 3 Project is a design and build contract between EEI and Citra Express Corporation (CCEC), the proponent, concessionaire, and implementing body, and San Miguel Corporation (SMC), the majority owner of CCEC.

SMC said in a statement that “after initial assessment” the incident has set back the target completion of the Skyway extension project from December 2020 to February 2021.

“We deeply regret this unfortunate accident and assure a full and thorough investigation. Our thoughts and concern are with the victims and we will make sure they will get all the help they need. Their welfare is our priority,” SMC said. – Rappler.com
