(UPDATED) Sinas will celebrate his 56th birthday on May 8 – the mandatory retirement age of police officers

Controversial General Debold Sinas officially bowed out Friday, May 7, from his post as the 25th chief of the Philippine National Police.

Held simultaneously with the retirement of Sinas was the PNP’s change of command, officially handing over the reins of chief of police to Lieutenant General Guillermo Eleazar.

In his valedictory, Sinas thanked the PNP community. He took over as PNP chief in November 2020.

“You made things easier for me to fulfill my mission for I am privileged and blessed to have worked with people, who shared the same level of passion and dedication for work as me,” Sinas said.

On Saturday, May 8, Sinas will celebrate his 56th birthday – the mandatory retirement age of police officers.

Sinas’ 6-month watch as top cop was marred with controversies. Among these was the killing in December 2020 of Sonya Gregorio and her son Frank. The mother and son were shot dead by Police Master Senior Master Sergeant Jonel Nuezca during an argument over a bamboo cannon or boga

This was followed by the death of a quarantine violator Darren Peñaredondo who died after being forced to do 300 rounds of exercise by police officers in General Trias, Cavite on April 5.

Sinas earned the moniker Mañanita during his stint as NCRPO director, when fellow police officers treated him with a party in Camp Bagong Diwa on his 55th birthday.

Photos posted on the NCRPO Facebook account showed there was a complete disregard of health protocols and the ban on mass gathering in the affair even though Metro Manila was under a lockdown at that time.

The police officers denied the event was a party and instead called it a mañanita as a “Happy Birthday, Sir Dodong!!” – Rappler.com
