In the region, Bicol Regional Training and Teaching Hospital in Albay is getting the lion's share of the vaccines developed by the Chinese biopharmaceutical company Sinovac Biotech

The Department of Health in Bicol finally received Thursday the 12,000 vials of its initial allocation of CoronaVac intended for health care personnel of the 4 COVID-19 referral hospitals in the region.

CoronaVac is the COVID-19 vaccine developed by the Chinese biopharmaceutical company Sinovac Biotech.

The first salvo of coronavirus vaccine arrived at the Legazpi City Domestic Airport from Manila on Thursday via Philippine Airlines flight PR2923.

Noemi Bron, DOH spokesperson, said the region’s allocation of vaccines would be given to Bicol Regional Training and Teaching Hospital in Albay, Bicol Medical Center in Naga City, Bicol Regional General Hospital and Geriatric Medical Center (BRGHGMC) in Cabusao, Camarines Sur and Naga Imaging Center Cooperative (NICC) Doctors Hospital in Naga City.

Of the 3 government referral hospitals, BRTTH would get the biggest share with 1,200. This would be followed by BRGHGMC with 600 vials, BMC with 526 and NICC with 74 vials.

These initial doses would be transported simultaneously to the pilot hospitals Friday, March. The first jabs would go to 5,842 frontliners from the 4 pilot hospitals that served as COVID-19 referral hospitals will be the first to receive the vaccines.

Dr Aurora Teresa Daluro, chief regional epidemiologist of DOH Bicol said that out of the 6 million population in Bicol, at least 4.2 million Bicolanos are targeted for vaccination.

“Vaccine will be given for those who need it most, for medical frontliners. The upcoming vaccine will be given to persons with co-morbidities, uniform personnel and the public. Vaccination is voluntary,” Dr. Ferchito Avelino, DOH Bicol assistant director said.

“For hospitals to be given a vaccine they should undergo the simulation, without simulation we will not be giving a vaccine,” he added.

DOH reported that from March 2020 to March 3, 2021 there are 4,859 cumulative cases of coronavirus with 454 active cases and 211 reported deaths. – Rappler.com
