The Department of Health releases the operational guidelines on administering booster shots

The Department of Health (DOH) said that health workers or those belonging to priority group A1 may choose the COVID-19 vaccine brand as their booster shot.

This was contained in DOH Memorandum Order No. 0484 on the operational guidelines on administering booster shots, released on Wednesday, November 17 – the first day first day of administering booster shots for health workers.

“The priority group A1 may choose to receive the same brand as his/her primary series (homologous booster) or another brand (heterogenous booster),” the DOH said.

The DOH added that health workers are given the option to choose whether they will receive a homologous or a heterogenous booster, depending on the availability of vaccine brands in the vaccination sites.

According to the DOH, homologous dose refers to the administration of COVID-19 vaccine of the same brand from the vaccine that was used to complete the first two doses, while heterologous dose refers to the administration of a different brand of COVID-19 vaccine.

Below is the DOH recommendation on booster dose combinations.

The DOH said that the following volumes shall be administered:

  • Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine: 0.3 ml/dose
  • Moderna COVID-19 vaccine: 0.25 ml/dose (half of the regular dose)
  • Sinovac COVID-19 vaccine: 0.5 ml/dose
  • AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine: 0.5 ml/dose

A fully vaccinated health worker can only receive one booster shot, which will be given at least six months after they received their first doses or primary series, then three months after if they got the single-shot Janssen vaccine.

Health workers are the first group to be cleared for booster doses because they were the first group to become eligible for COVID-19 vaccines when the Philippines started its immunization campaign in March 2021 or seven months ago.

As of November 14, around 34.61% of the country’s population have received the first of two doses of the vaccine. Meanwhile, those who have taken both jabs as well as single-dose vaccines represent around 28.65% of the population. – Rappler.com
