President Rodrigo Duterte ends his international debut by showing a different face of “The Punisher.” It’s the same no-nonsense president, but without what critics call his “colorful words.”
In one of his speeches, Duterte talks about regional issues – among these, the need for a drug-free ASEAN.
Duterte also briefly chats with the world’s most powerful men – among them men he has slighted with his brand of aggressive talk.
US President Barack Obama and UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, whom he both lambasted when they dared to criticize his war on drugs and its rising body count.
He also chats with Chinese Premier Li Keqiang, as Manila and Beijing fight over the South China Sea
On the last day of the summit, Duterte receives the chairmanship of ASEAN in 2017.
After the ASEAN Summit, Duterte leaves a seemingly different man – short speeches, no side comments, polite language. It remains to be seen, though, if he will ever live down that tiff with the US President.
