Election Commissioner Guanzon's father dies at 95

The father of Elections Commissioner Rowena Guanzon passed away in a hospital here on Thursday, October 1.

Guanzon, in a Facebook post, said "it is with sadness that we announce the passing of our father, Judge Sixto Rojas Guanzon, who joined his Creator today, October 1. He was 95 years old." He succumbed to gastrointestinal bleeding.

Two months ago, his wife, the late Negros Occidental board member Elvira Guanzon, who practiced law for the poor, also passed away at 95 on July 11.

The Elections commissioner, who is from Cadiz City where she was a former mayor, said that her father was a recipient of the United States Congressional Gold Medal for heroism during World War II.

He graduated summa cum laude in Silliman University in 1948, and cum laude from the Manuel L. Quezon University School of Law in 1952.

His body will lie in state at the Acropolis Gardens in this city.

He is survived by his sons, Dr Mateo III, Board Member Sixto Jr, Dr Casten, Dr Jeffry and Pengar, and daughters Judge Frances, Commissioner Rowena and Dr. Ma. Luz Vicente. ā€“ Rappler.com
