MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) – Banking on an anti-corruption platform, pork scam lawyer Levito Baligod filed his certificate of candidacy (COC) for senator at the Commission on Elections (Comelec) office in Intramuros, Manila, on Friday, October 16.
Baligod, who will run as an independent candidate, acted as counsel for pork scam whistleblowers Benhur Luy and Merlina Suñas. Luy cut ties with him in 2014 after he was observed to have had less time for the whistleblower.
“Noong nilalabanan natin ang korapsyon as an ordinary citizen, nakagawa tayo ng konting accomplishtment pero kailangan itong ipagpatuloy dahil ang laban sa korapsyon dapat walang sinasanto, walang sinisino,” Baligod said after filing his COC.
(When I fought corruption as an ordinary citizen, we had some accomplishment but we need to continue the fight which should not spare anyone.)
“Corruption is the worst thief. It steals the hope for our country, it steals a better future for our country, and more importantly, it steals the morality of the individual. So kumakandidato ako para may mas konkreto akong magawa kung nasa loob ako ng gobyerno (I’m running because I can do something concrete if I’m in government),” he added.
Baligod said he has talked to senatorial re-electionist Panfilo Lacson and a representative of fellow aspirant Walden Bello on forming a “group of independents.”
The lawyer earlier said that some groups had approached him to consider a senatorial run so he could advance his advocacy. – Rappler.com
