MANILA, Philippines – The 6 candidates vying for the country’s second highest post did not mince words as they went head-to-head in a debate at the University of Santo Tomas (UST) on Sunday, April 10.

Just as intense – the reactions of people on social media.

Rappler’s social media team compiled some of the funniest tweets that caught our attention during and after the heated debate. Read on!

‘Fistfight in UST’

Remember the ‘Suntukan sa Ace Hardware’ event that triggered an online trend? There have been spin-offs like ‘Batuhan ng Siomai sa Morayta,’ ‘Suntukan sa Dapitan,’ and now – an imaginary fistfight between senators Alan Peter Cayetano and Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr outside UST. Cayetano-Duterte-Marcos love triangle

Tensions between Cayetano and Marcos weren’t just about the Marcoses’ ill-gotten wealth. After all, Marcos had asked to be Rodrigo Duterte’s running mate, but the Davao City mayor’s sweet yes went to Cayetano. Talk about a love triangle to end all love triangles.


 

You can also look at it in the context of a family feud.

 


 

Honasan was (actually) there

Senator Gregorio “Gringo” Honasan II wasn’t exactly a standout in the debate. Even on social media, he was barely felt.

What did stand out, though, was Senator Francis “Chiz” Escudero’s speaking style – described as too wordy and apparently rehearsed. It didn’t take long for social media users to poke fun at the senator’s manner of speaking.

Netizens also suggested an alternative career for the senator.

 

 

They also imagined how presidential candidate and senator Miriam Defensor Santiago, known for being feisty, would react to Escudero’s speaking style. (Santiago, though, is a family friend of Escudero’s wife Heart, and actually introduced the couple to each other.)

 

‘The best woman’

Speaking of feisty, Camarines Sur 3rd District Representative Leni Robredo, the only woman in the vice presidential race, showed hints of fierceness in the showdown.

One post jokingly pointed out that Robredo took a discreet swipe at Marcos when the candidates were asked whether they engaged in corrupt activities.

 

It was Robredo’s sassy, witty closing statement that’ll probably be one of the most remembered lines of the debate, too.

Concrete plans?

Now, there was plenty of drama, but how about concrete plans?


 

 

As the dust settled after the debate, someone took the opportunity to remind everyone of a harsh fact.
