MANILA, Philippines – Just release complete documents if you have nothing to hide.

This was presidential bet Grace Poe’s call to her closest rival Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte on Sunday, May 1.

Duterte, who is also running on an anti-corruption platform, is facing allegations that he has undeclared millions of pesos in a supposedly secret bank account.

“Eh kung sa tingin ko naman kung walang tinatago bakit ayaw ilabas lahat? So yun lang naman, kung walang itinatago, ilabas. At least matapos na iyan. Ilang araw na lang natitira,” Poe said in a chance interview in Marikina.

(In my view, if he’s not hiding anything, why not release everything? That’s it, if he’s not hiding anything, release it. So the issue would be done already. We only have a few days left.)

She asserted: “Kung walang tinatago, mabilis pa sa alas-kwatro nilabas na nila yan.” (If there’s nothing hidden, they would release it quickly.)

Poe likened the situation to questions on her citizenship and residency – the subject of disqualification cases against her. Poe claimed she presented all documents and “transactions” to the public for transparency. (READ: TIMELINE: Grace Poe’s citizenship, residency)

“Alam mo ako yung buhay ko isang bukas na aklat. Noong ako’y sinampahan ng kahit anu-ano, at kahit na sa media, bago pa namin sinampa (ang mga dokumento) pinakita na namin sa inyo lahat ng transaksyon mula sa umpisa para walang duda,” said Poe, who also earlier drew flak for failing to inform the public during the campaign that her husband was a former member of the US Air Force.

(You know, my life is an open book. When they filed cases against me, and even with media, before I submitted the documents, we showed you all the transactions from the start so there would be no doubt.)

Duterte earlier vowed to open his accounts with the Bank of the Philippines Islands on Monday, May 2. The mayor earlier said the accusations are “garbage” but later on admitted owning the questionable accounts, saying it only has a little less than the alleged amount of P211 million.

But Senator Antonio Trillanes IV, who did the exposé, said the mayor should not only divulge the current balance of his accounts but the transaction history as well. Trillanes also accused Duterte of having more than P2 billion in 17 accounts in 3 banks – two in Manila and one in Davao.

“This is important because, if Duterte has already withdrawn the money before Monday, then the total amount of transactions would not be reflected on the current account balance,” Trillanes said in a statement on Friday, April 29.

Trillanes is running solo for vice president but is carrying Poe as his presidential candidate. Duterte has overtaken Poe in recent presidential preference polls. – Rappler.com
