MANILA, Philippines – Former basketball coach Binky Favis is headed for a top finish in the city council race in the second district of Parañaque.
Favis, who aims for his third and final term as councilor, is leading with 83,084 votes, according to the partial and unofficial election tally via COMELEC.
As of 9:56 pm on Tuesday, May 10, 99.52% of the clustered precincts in Parañaque City have already reported their election returns, and Favis is likely in the home-stretch of claiming one of the 8 council seats.
Favis, who coached the now-defunct Coca-Cola Tigers in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) for 3 years, first ran for political office in 2010 and ranked No. 3 in his successful 2013 re-election bid.
Aside from his PBA stint, Favis had his first taste of coaching duties in the collegiate ranks, serving as an assistant coach of University of Santo Tomas in 1993.
That year, the Dennis Espino-manned Growling Tigers swept the 14-game elimination round to capture the UAAP crown.
Favis was later tapped to be the mentor of Colegio de San Juan de Letran, steering the Muralla-based Knights to an NCAA basketball championship in 1999. – Rappler.com
