Narvacan Mayor Zuriel Zaragoza files his certificate of candidacy for governor against incumbent Ryan Singson, son of Ilocos Sur kingpin Chavit Singson

ILOCOS SUR, Philippines – It is a battle of two families in Ilocos Sur as scions of political clans will run against each other for governor.

Narvacan Mayor Zuriel Zaragoza on Wednesday, October 17, filed his certificate of candidacy (COC) for governor against incumbent Ryan Singson who filed his on Monday, October 15.

Zuriel Zaragoza’s sister Annika is running for vice governor. Ryan Singson’s running mate is his uncle Jeremiah.

In Narvacan, it is Zuriel’s father Edgardo who will run for mayor against Luis “Chavit” Singson, father of Ryan. (READ: Chavit Singson running for Narvacan mayor)

In sweltering heat, Zaragoza’s convoy of 40 cars and buses arrived at the Comelec provincial office on Wednesday.

“We want to break the Singsons’ 50-year hold on the province,” Zaragoza said.

Zaragoza’s supporters wore white while the Singsons were in red.

The rivals are however running under administration parties, as Zaragoza got the nod of the ruling PDP-Laban and MRRD while the Singsons’ homegrown party Bileg has a coalition with Davao Mayor Sara Duterte’s Hugpong ng Pagbabago.

Singson is the son of longtime governor Chavit Singson, who now wants to rule Narvacan.

Narvacan, the province’s 3rd largest town, has been controlled by the Zaragozas for about 3 decades.

Ilocos Sur 1st District Representative Deogracias Savellano and 2nd District Representative Eric Singson* are common candidates of the two rivals.

The last time that Ilocos Sur had a fierce gubernatorial battle like this was in 1998, when Eric Singson fought his cousin Chavit for governor, a race Chavit narrowly won. – Rappler.com
