RIZAL, Philippines (UPDATED) – Reelectionist senator Grace Poe on Tuesday, April 9, supported calls to revisit Republic Act (RA) No. 11235 or the Motorcycle Crime Prevention Act of 2019.

Responding to questions in a media interview in Rizal on Tuesday, Poe said changes in the law could be done through the Implementing Rules and Regulations (IRR), which will be drafted by the Department of Transportation and the LTO.

President Rodrigo Duterte had earlier said that he would ask the Land Transportation Office (LTO) to suspend the implementation of “doble plaka” law, which imposes two bigger license plates for motorcycles. (READ: Changes in ‘doble plaka’ law may be done through IRR, amendment – Panelo)

“Sa tingin ko makakabuti naman dahil noong ginawa nila ‘yang IRR, siguro puwede nilang rebisitahin ‘yun eh. Marami ngang mas masaya na pinakinggan nga ng ating Pangulo. .At puwede namang ma-amyendahan sa Senado ‘yan…. Safety ‘yung pinakapangunahin nating dapat isipin,” Poe said in a media interview in Rizal.

(I think it’s good because when the IRR is being crafted, then maybe they can revisit the provisions. Many were happy that the President listened to them. And that can be amended at the Senate…. We should first think about safety.)

Senator Richard Gordon, the author of the law, said he would explain to the President that the law would “give justice” to victims of riding-in-tandem gunmen, and “address” public complaints against extrajudicial killings.
